In 586 B.C. Jerusalem fell and its inhabitants were carried off into exile to Babylon. There exile was a result of their disobedience to God. Since Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden, humanity lives in a state of exile away from the perfect presence of God, but just as God promised return from exile for His people Judah, so He has promised us a return to Himself.
